When Ceiling Lamps meet Robotics: the GlaDOS lamp project

“I’m gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon, that will burn your house down!”

-Cave Johnson-

Combustible lemons are just one of the many diabolically cool concepts brought to us by the Portal series. However, GlaDOS, the sophisticated killer-robot, was obviously our favorite. How cool would it be to take her home? Stop dreaming – because now you can set her up in your own house!

portal lamp

Dragonator from Instructables is the man we need. He’s converted a project to design a robotic arm into a GlaDOS-esque robotic celling arm lamp (which can also be used as a robotic arm). These step-by-step instructions teach you how to build it. All you need is a 3D printer (or the services of one – time to stop by 3D Concept Studio), the materials, knowledge, time – and, er, quite a bit of money.

But it’s cool. Not only is it a movable lamp, but you can eventually have it hanging above your dinner table giving the worst possible comments to ruin every perfect moment with your loved ones. We can’t think of anything better.

On par with GlaDOS is another Portal-inspired robot. Meet the second most-loved part of Portal; the Turrets.

The half-built Turret has an IP webcam in the middle for tracking, two turrets in the sides to shoot nerf bullets and a laser to point. It’s entirely programmed using MATLAB and Arduino. It can track, talk and shoot, the exact actions which we saw in Portal.

As for GlaDOS, smart homes are already on the way and GlaDOS seems like a great way to start (unless you have a phobia for sarcasm).
