Google Pixel’s mid-range phones have often been exciting anticipation for users. Ever since the Pixel 3, the tech giant has released an affordable follow-up version of its flagship phone. With the current version, the anticipation is probably a bit higher for the Pixel 6a.

Although there hasn’t been any official communication about the rumored phone yet, recent leaks would suggest that the Pixel 6a is a very likely possibility. Even Google leaked the Pixel 6a name. No, not in a blog post or a video, but in a Google-produced coloring book of all things.

What to expect

Leaked renders suggest that the budget phone will have the same signature look as the regular Pixel 6. It looks like there might not be a headphone jack on the phone either. If that’s the case this will be the first mid-range Pixel device to come without a headphone jack. So, you may find this annoying if you’re not one for Bluetooth earphones or type C/dongle audio options.

According to the leaks, the Pixel 6a looks to be more compact than the rest in the range with dimensions of 152.2 x 71.8. x 8.7mm and a 6.2-inch display. The regular Pixel 6 stands at 158.6 x 74.8 x 8.9mm with a 6.4-inch display.

The camera will reportedly be more budget-oriented as well. Rumors suggest the phone will house a 12.2MP camera as opposed to the 50MP main camera. Other probable lenses may be 12MP ultra-wide and an 8MP selfie camera.

On the inside, however, the Pixel 6A will utilize the same Tensor processor used in the 6.

When will it release and how much will it cost

Last year, the Pixel 5a was released in August which was almost a year after the Pixel 5 launch. So it’s safe to say that the Pixel 6a might see a similar release date closer to the Pixel 7 launch. August 2022 is a likely launch window.

With regards to pricing, it’s expected to be around USD 400 and 500. As of now, the Pixel 5a 5G goes for around LKR 127,000 while the Pixel 6 usually hits over LKR 200,000. Should the Pixel 6a hit Lankan stores, you may see a price close to the 150,000 mark. Doesn’t really scream midrange at that price point. But unfortunately, smartphone prices have drastically shot up over the past year with availability and various restrictions playing a huge factor.

But if you’re considering a new phone this year it might be worth holding out for a Pixel 6a. Particularly considering how well received the midrange Pixel phones are among Android users.
