ShowOff is the winning app developed by team HelloWorld, a bunch of enthusiastic students at CodeFest 2013 (marking a year of php meet-ups) organized by Webgurus International Sri Lanka.
The two day event which took place on the 19th and 20th January, climaxed with the 5 teams pitching their ideas to a panel of judges addressing the Tourism industry in Sri Lanka. Out of the five highly creative and potential applications, which included a 3D Game called “SpeedFest 2013” with localized landscapes of Kandy, and a twitter based app which captures tweets by tourists to create a heat map of hotspots in Sri Lanka, the one presented by HelloWorld caught the attention of the judges to be creative, yet simple and practical tool to help stimulate the local Tourism industry. The app can be categorized as social media and mobile solution, inspired by the popular photo sharing app “Instagram” with a local touch.
The mobile app is currently being developed for the android platform. The app uses Geo tagging capabilities to add custom photo-frames and effects, and the user also gets the option of manually tagging friends and family. Although the app isn’t technologically groundbreaking in features it attempts to create an emotional attachment with tourists by promoting their photos with loved ones through Sri Lankan based themes. The app is also capable of intelligently sending periodic notifications to tourists saying “We miss you” through photo collages, creating a desire for them to come back!
The brains behind this highly potential app is comprised of Shenal Silva, Dehan de Croos, Kasun Thennakoon, Malintha Fernando and Nirojan Selvanadan who are currently 2nd Year Students at the University of Moratuwa. HelloWorld is currently hoping to launch their product to the Google Play Store with the sponsorship of Dr.Komniski, a Nederland based Web Development company, together with its partner company, WebGurus International Sri Lanaka.
