Calcey Springboard is a scholarship for aspiring software engineers

Calcey Technologies has introduced a new scholarship program, one that aims to bring more people into Sri Lanka’s tech industry. Dubbed “Calcey Springboard”, it’s an open-for-all initiative that will train deserving students and help kickstart their careers as software engineers. ” In doing so, we also aim to eliminate the barriers students face in choosing computer science as a career path,” mentions the company.

Calcey Springboard will kick off via a cognitive test that will evaulate selection for the program. Afterwards, the company hopes to host an introduction workshop to prospective students. Those selected to Calcey Springboard will follow a 12-month program complete with MOOCs from world renowned universities.

The initiative will have a total endowment of LKR 10 million where all verified credientials required to complete the course will be be covered. Upon completion, graduates could opt for an internship at Calcey or seek employment in another company as a Software Engineer.

It’s a three-semester scheme where the first semester will guide students through the basics ranging from string manipulation and modular arithmetic to HTML5 and JavaScript. Once you pass the end semester exam, you will move to the next segment. The second semester will see you learn more specifics around Python, databases, and Object Oriented Programming. After passing the second semester exam, students will move to the final section. This is where you will choose your specialization from web, mobile, and backend development. the final semseter is all about learning how to write clean code, cloud computing, and Github. After getting through the final exam, Calcey will award students a certificate as a mark of completion, followed by an internship.

For those wondering, Calcey will be providing devices too. The initiative is open for everyone, regardless of whether you’re a school leaver or a degreeholder. Currently, Calcey Springboard is open for applications until 30 November. Anyone interested can visit Calcey’s site for more details.

Commenting on the scholarship scheme, CEO Managala Karunaratne mentions that Calcey won’t be where it is today if it wasn’t for Sri Lanka’s state education system and the tech talent. “We all have a responsibility to send the elevator back down/pay it forward. That’s why we’re launching Calcey Springboard so anyone can begin a career as a software engineer,” says Karunaratne.
