Looking into 2022

It’s been only a few months since we relaunched and already much has happened since then. From Sri Lanka’s misguided crypto ambitions to Facebook rebranding itself, 2021 has been an eventful year for tech amidst the global pandemic and the turbulent situation in Sri Lanka. It’s safe to say that the new year will shape to be just as eventful, if not more. As such, we as a publication hope to amp things up going into 2022.

Building a stronger base

We want to be able to tell great stories, bring important matters to light, make an impact and build engagement in the tech industry both locally and in the international community. We already have years of history behind us that have helped set the ReadMe name. Now it’s high time we take the name further.

What does that mean? For one thing, it means doubling down on what we started a few months ago, to bring better transparency and integrity into the work we do. We want to represent the unrepresented, give the spotlight to those who deserve it, bring critique to where it matters, and a whole lot more.  So whether it’s about a promising non-tech startup or a head-scratching facepalm-worthy story from the industry, we hope to put our voice in where it counts.

Getting into other formats

We also aim to get back into video content, which we used to do so frequently in the past. Again, we want to ensure that we put out content that brings value instead of just publishing colorful videos just because they look nice on social media.

We have similar ambitions on audio too and a few plans are already in the works. Great, more of us blabbering about tech. Yes, deal with it.

Growing the team

There are so many great stories out there and we want to be able to capture them in the best light possible. Part of that comes down to building the internal team of writers and creatives. We will be focusing on attracting the right talent to help us with our growth ambitions. So if any writer regardless of whether you’re the occasional type or the rigorous storyteller who has been at it for a while, we would love to hear from you. Drop us an email at [email protected].

Challenging times

While we’re excited about what the new year holds for us, we’re also wary about the current situation. From gas shortages to disrupted electricity supply across the country, the current crisis is continuing to impact many industries, which in turn is impacting the tech industry as well. So, to say 2022 will be a bit of a challenge for all of us is an understatement.

Yet, hope still remains in some shape and form. We have Digital Sri Lanka in full swing. Granted, some of the announcements we’ve been seeing made us eyeroll a few times. But there’s a bit of “maybe this might work out” with a few of them too.

We also saw an amp up in tech funding too. WSO2 bagged USD 90 million from Goldman Sachs, Kapruka and hSenid went public on the Colombo Stock Exchange. Now there are rumors of more tech companies joining the CSE.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka also has other promising prospects to look forward to ranging from the much-anticipated number portability feature to the data protection bill passing into law.

So here’s us naively clinging on to that hope as we continue our own efforts to build a better future. Thanks for all the reading.

Happy New Year to you all!
